Algi, the review

Fish and seafood restaurant. Friendly, relaxed atmosphere and professional cooking.

It was my second visit there.

New restaurant in town and yet it managed to have its own loyal regulars during its 1.5 years of service. I recommend making a reservation before your visit.

We enjoyed:

*Shrimps “on fire” with a sauce based on apricot and bottarga,

fried anchovy balls served with tzatziki,

*tomato salad with Feta PDO, plum, grapes.

Last but not least,

*melon and cucumber salad with Melichloro cheese from Lemnos and basil leaves refreshed our palate beautifully. I specifically enjoyed the melon juice in combination with the extra virgin olive oil in this dish.

I used Zea bread for dipping into the lush and “precious” sauce of apricot juice and dried bottarga. The complimentary *galatopita (milkpie) with strawberry jam had a soft, airy and fluffy texture, and its taste was absolutely balanced. I really enjoyed it.

From the list of alcoholic beverages, I chose a glass of Roditis variety from Chalkia winery -label *“Alepou”– which I hadn’t tried before. I am looking forward to visiting restaurants that have something new to me to try in their winelist. That was an unexpected treat. The wine has a full body, delicate primary aromas of Roditis and a good balance overall. My date chose a Greek beer that was equally impressive and qualitative —aromatic, well-structured, full bodied, well balanced:  *Barley Easy IPA, abv.4.5% ABV, by Alea Brewing Co. in collaboration with Sourmena Brew. We ordered bottled water and we were served a bottle of natural mineral water from a Greek spring, with low sodium content. It served its purpose nicely as well.

The list of alcoholic beverages changes frequently to pair with the food menu, which changes according to seasonality and market availability.

During our previous visit, we enjoyed *shrimps “on fire” in a lighter—yet equally delicious sauce with complex flavors, also, *grilled axillary seabream (Pagellus acarne)- mousmouli in Greek- accompanied by a marvellous, light and airy white *eggplant salad. The *grilled tuna skewer with green beans and sunflower seed paste was interesting enough as a concept and the combination of ingredients was a success. Lastly, we ordered a *tomato salad with PDO Feta, beetroot, plum, capers, and spearmint leaves.

The quality of the ingredients, the successful flavor combinations, the impressive alcoholic beverages list —with a focus on wines, particularly low-intervention ones— the genuine personal interest of the service and the flexibility regarding personal preferences, are some of the reasons that keep me coming back.

Until next time.
